Germany has 226 gigawatts of battery storage waiting in line for a grid connection — and the wait can stretch into years.
By the end of 2024, Germany's four transmission grid operators had logged around 650 connection requests for utility-scale battery-storage projects totalling roughly 226 GW — far more than the network can carry. Developers pay for an early feasibility study, then wait six to twelve months — sometimes longer — for the regional grid operator to even confirm whether free capacity exists at their planned site. The Bundesnetzagentur (Germany's national grid regulator) rewrote its battery-storage FAQ on 30 January 2026 to bring some order. The queue kept growing.
01The pain
650 connection requests. 226 gigawatts of battery storage waiting to plug into the German grid — the queue Germany's four transmission grid operators reported at end-2024, and growing.1 A new developer picks a site, pays for an early feasibility study, then waits six to twelve months for the Verteilnetzbetreiber (the regional grid operator that owns the medium-voltage wires) to come back with a yes, a no, or a partial yes that gets walked back when commissioning starts.2
The Bundesnetzagentur (Germany's national grid regulator) rewrote its battery-storage FAQ on 30 January 2026 to bring some order to who answers what.3 The queue did not shrink. The industry trade body Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-Solar) called it "a wonder that any storage projects exist in Germany at all" in November 2025.4
Getting in costs money before any revenue lands. Most usable connection points only open after a new substation is built, and the developer pays the Baukostenzuschuss (the construction cost surcharge for that substation) on top of project capex.5 Direktvermarktung (selling battery output on the wholesale power exchange) only pays above the 500 kW / 1 MWh threshold, so smaller commercial systems sit outside the prices that justify the kit. Every month of waiting eats into 4 August 2029, when the grid-fee exemption for new Großspeicher (utility-scale batteries above 1 MW) ends — miss it and the twenty-year revenue model breaks.6

02Who solves this today
Five German-market vendors that publicly market themselves as solving exactly the gap the BESS connection queue opens — full-stack BESS development with grid-topology site search, turnkey integrator services for utility-scale and commercial systems, and licensed wholesale-trading platforms that monetise the asset once it is finally connected. Each homepage was checked live on the date of writing. The list is intentionally narrow.
Adjacent vendors were considered. Eco Stor (eco-stor.com), a Norwegian-German second-life BESS container vendor, makes the kit but does not market end-to-end German grid-connection brokerage and so is not catalogued here. ENVIRIA (enviria.energy) markets commercial PV plus battery and energy management to German industry but is broader than the BESS-grid-connection wedge. The Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-Solar), the Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA) and the four transmission grid operators (50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, TransnetBW) are referenced in section 01 as the industry trade body, the national grid regulator and the network operators respectively, not third-party solution providers.
