Changsin-dong stocked Korea's small shops for fifty years. 1688 just listed every SKU at one-tenth.
Changsin-dong, a half-square-kilometre cluster of small-goods wholesalers in central Seoul, has supplied stationery stores and toy shops across South Korea for five decades. Eighty percent of its volume is wholesale — boxes of pens, plastic figurines, low-margin school supplies sold to retail shop-owners who add a markup and resell. China's 1688.com (the business-to-business platform of the Alibaba Group that supplies Chinese domestic shopkeepers) now ships direct to Korean small retailers, listing identical SKUs at roughly one-tenth the Changsin-dong wholesale price. Korea's wholesale industry contracted 9.8% year-on-year in Q1 2026 by sole-proprietor count, per national-tax-office data; 1688's announced Korean-language portal — zero platform fee beyond shipping and customs — is set to widen the gap.
01The pain
Changsin-dong, a half-square-kilometre cluster in Jongno-gu, central Seoul, has supplied stationery shops and small toy stores across South Korea for fifty years. Pens by the box. Plastic figurines by the crate. Eighty percent of the district's volume is wholesale, sold to retail shop-owners who add a markup and resell.1 "After VAT and tariffs, a normal price cannot exist at the (Chinese wholesale) price," one Changsin-dong shop-owner told SBS in 2024.1
The Chinese wholesale price is 1688.com, the business-to-business platform run by the Alibaba Group that supplies Chinese domestic shopkeepers. Korean small retailers (the wholesalers' customers) now order from it directly. The identical pen sits on 1688 at roughly one-tenth the Changsin-dong wholesale price. Even after Korean import value-added tax (10%) and the small-parcel customs tariff, the landed cost still undercuts the domestic wholesaler. The math the shop-owner described is not a complaint; it is the gap a Korean retailer sees on screen.
The slide is set to steepen. 1688 announced a Korean-language portal with zero platform fee beyond shipping and customs, due to launch by end-2026.6 Korean dropshippers (small online resellers) already list 1688 inventory on Naver Shopping (Korea's largest online marketplace) and order from China only after a customer pays — a working-capital flip the Changsin-dong wholesaler, who holds physical stock and pays Seoul rent, cannot match. Automated software now lists 1688 and Taobao inventory onto Korean marketplaces overnight.5
"1688 requires minimum-order quantities, so it's a different shape. The Chinese 1688 purchase-agency businesses will get cleaned out, and Korean wholesale platforms like Domaekkoong will take a severe hit."

«1688은 최소수량 몇개씩은 해야하는 곳이라서 성격이 좀 다릅니다. 중국내에서 1688 구매대행하던 업체들이 정리될것 같고, 도매꾹 같은곳은 타격을 심하게 받겠네요»

02Who solves this today
Korean domestic B2B sourcing platforms a small retailer could plausibly use as an alternative to 1688 — aggregating Korean-made and Korea-warehoused small goods, with supplier vetting, KC safety certification surfacing, and (in some cases) one-day domestic fulfilment. Each homepage was checked live on the date of writing. Inclusion is not endorsement; none of these are sold by us. Honest gap: most Korean B2B sourcing platforms today still mix domestic and Chinese-origin inventory; a clean Korean-made-only, KC-certified, one-day-fulfilment offer is the open wedge.
Listed providers publicly self-market in one of the wedges named above. Inclusion is not endorsement. Considered and dropped (each fetched on the date of writing): 도매매 (Domemae, domemae.com) — DNS unresolved at fetch time; the brand survives as a sub-route of Domeggook (domemedb.domeggook.com), and we list the parent instead. 온채널 (Onch3, onch3.co.kr) — fetch timed out at 30 seconds, no live homepage content captured. 셀러허브 (SellerHub, sellerhub.co.kr) — JS-only homepage with no inspectable product copy at the entry point. 사방넷 (SabangNet, sabangnet.co.kr) — fetch produced no extractable content (likely JS-only). B2B Gmarket (b2b.gmarket.co.kr) — DNS unresolved at fetch time. Wholesale21 (wholesale21.com) — surfaced as English-locale, not Korea-focused. The named press outlets (SBS, Digital Times) and forum boards (Clien) are sources, not solution providers; 1688.com itself is the cross-border platform causing the pain, not a solution.
