Cryptosporidium cases in Israeli pools jumped 8× in a year. Chlorine cannot kill it.
Israel's Ministry of Health (the national public-health regulator) logged 418 confirmed cryptosporidium cases in 2021 and 3,302 in 2022, an eightfold rise in a single year. Cryptosporidium is a chlorine-resistant gut parasite that spreads in pool water; the drug doctors prescribe to clear the infection, nitazoxanide, is not registered in Israel, so a contaminated hotel pool can leave guests sick for months. The Ministry's 2014 cryptosporidium guidance, written under the 1994 Business Licensing (Sanitation Conditions for Swimming Pools) Regulations, tells operators that chlorine and bromine alone do not work and that every public pool should add an ultraviolet (UV) reactor or an ozone unit plus a finer cartridge filter. Roughly 1,200 hotel pools, kibbutz pools, country-club pools and water-park pools fall under that regulation. Very few have been retrofitted. A medium-pressure UV reactor with the ultra-fine filter, chemistry sensor pack and installation runs ₪80,000 to ₪250,000 per pool, depending on flow rate. Pool inspectors closed Orot Israel College's pool on 1 August 2024 for chemistry violations; a closure of that kind costs a kibbutz or a hotel a full summer of revenue.
01The pain
Israel's Ministry of Health (the national public-health regulator) logged 418 cryptosporidium cases in 2021 and 3,302 in 2022, eight times more in a single year, almost all traced back to swimming pools.1 The parasite is chlorine-resistant. Nitazoxanide, the drug used to clear it, is not sold in Israel, so contaminated guests stay sick for months.
The Ministry's 2014 cryptosporidium guidance, written under the 1994 Business Licensing (Sanitation Conditions for Swimming Pools) Regulations, says chlorine and bromine do not work. Pools need an ultraviolet (UV) reactor or ozone unit plus a finer cartridge filter.2 Roughly 1,200 hotel, country-club, kibbutz and water-park pools fall under that rule. Few have been retrofitted. A retrofit costs ₪80,000 to ₪250,000.
Pool inspectors closed Orot Israel College's pool on 1 August 2024 for chemistry violations.3 A closure that long costs a kibbutz or a hotel a full summer of revenue. The chlorine works on the easy bugs. The expensive parasite swims right through it. Hotel maintenance managers along the Dead Sea, kibbutz pool committees in the Galilee and country-club operators around Tel Aviv all read the same regulator floor and reach the same decision: a UV reactor, or a closed pool.

02Who solves this today
Five Israeli pool-equipment and engineering vendors publicly self-marketing UV-disinfection systems, ultra-fine cartridge filtration and related water-quality equipment for the niche a hotel, country-club or kibbutz pool operator reaches for when the 2014 Ministry of Health cryptosporidium guidance forces a retrofit. Each product or article page was checked live on the date of writing. Inclusion is not endorsement.
Listed providers publicly market UV-disinfection equipment, ozone units, ultra-fine cartridge filters or the regulator-submission paperwork for Israeli public-pool retrofits on their own product or article pages. Inclusion is not endorsement. Considered and dropped (each WebFetched on the date of writing): Atlantium Technologies (atlantium.com) — Israeli-headquartered UV-disinfection leader, but the company's market list (aquaculture, biopharma, ballast water, food & beverage, industry, municipal) does not include swimming pools and its UV reactors are not marketed to hotel- or country-club-pool operators; Adel Pool Store (adelpoolstore.co.il), Pool House (pool-house.co.il), Sport Center (sportcenter.co.il), Big Sport 4 U (bigsport4u.co.il) — Israeli pool-equipment retailers all selling the same Resilience UV Magen unit; one listing (Saquoia) is sufficient to represent the Resilience product line and avoid catalogue padding; Israeli regulators and press (Ministry of Health Environmental Health Department, Sheba Medical Center's Society for Parasitology, Ynet, ICE, Israel Hayom) are referenced in section 01 as administering bodies and press citations, not third-party solution providers.

Operators discussing this
Israeli pool-operator chat lives almost entirely in closed channels — the certified-operator training cohorts run by the Ministry of Health, the closed members section of the Israeli pool-operator union, and the WhatsApp groups of hotel maintenance managers and kibbutz pool committees. israelswim.com is the only public Hebrew operator-facing publication and its body was unreachable from this environment (TLSV1 alert). On the public surface, the substitute-trio path is the only honest one: the regulator's grower-of-record guidance, the vendor product page deployed across the same hotel and kibbutz pools, and the national press where named clinicians and named pool closures appear on the record.
