KDV & MTV: the tax stack you can't predict until after the sale.

Independent used-car dealers across Sahibinden and Arabam forums consistently report losing 15–20 hours a week to tax-and-paperwork issues that block sales at registration — and a per-vehicle tax burden they can't estimate up front.

01The pain

For independent used-car dealers in Turkey, the line between profit and loss often runs straight through KDV (Katma Değer Vergisi — Turkey's value-added tax) and MTV (Motorlu Taşıtlar Vergisi — motor vehicle tax). Operators across the dealer forums report the same shape of problem: you cannot reliably estimate a vehicle's tax exposure before you commit to buying it.1,2

A dealer who buys from a tax-debt-encumbered seller can find the sale blocked at the title-transfer office (noter) months later. A dealer who misclassifies a vehicle as export-bound to claim a VAT exemption can owe back-VAT and penalties when the export documentation doesn't survive scrutiny. The classification rules themselves have shifted at least three times since 2023 — first via the platform-side antitrust action against the dominant marketplace, then via two separate Ministry of Trade communiqués on dealer-platform liability.3,4

Forum operators consistently cite 15–20 hours per week spent on tax-and-paperwork issues — roughly half a working day every day, time that doesn't move inventory.5

The cumulative effect is structural: small dealers (1–3 lot vehicles, common in regional cities) operate at a permanent disadvantage to chain operators with in-house counsel. Several forum threads explicitly describe leaving the trade entirely after a single mis-classified export deal wiped a quarter's margin.6,7
