Agriculture · Israel · War rebuild heavy iron

Tanks crushed 100,000 dunams of Otef Aza farmland. Israel needs ₪300 million of heavy iron to bring it back.

Since 7 October 2023 the Israeli army has used at least 100,000 dunams (10,000 hectares, roughly 25,000 acres) of Western Negev farmland as a staging ground. Tanks and tracked vehicles compacted wet winter topsoil. Berms, trenches and temporary bases tore up irrigation lines and drainage. Greenhouses were flattened. The Ministry of Agriculture (Israel's farming regulator) now maps six categories of damage and prices first-pass soil rehabilitation at ₪1,000–3,000 per dunam, about ₪300 million in total (roughly $80 million). That figure leaves out greenhouse rebuilds, packing-house repair, and the years of lost harvests while the soil recovers. Returning kibbutz farmers cannot do this work with on-farm tractors. The job needs heavy iron at scale, and the scale is not there yet.

01The pain

Yiftach Nahari runs K.S.M, a joint farm company owned by three border-belt kibbutzim (collective Israeli farming villages): Kfar Aza, Sa'ad and Mefalsim. K.S.M has 70 staff and farms 26,500 dunams. (A dunam is 1,000 square metres; ten dunams equal one hectare.) Before 7 October 2023 the Otef Aza belt grew roughly three-quarters of Israel's vegetables and a fifth of Israel's fruit. Otef Aza is the Western Negev strip along the Gaza border. Today Nahari says his crews work "sometimes under fire, with partial armour and faulty infrastructure."1

For nineteen months the Israeli army used at least 100,000 dunams of this farmland as a staging ground. Tanks crushed wet topsoil. Berms, trenches and temporary bases tore up irrigation and drainage. Greenhouses were flattened. The Ministry of Agriculture (Israel's farming regulator) now maps six damage categories and prices first-pass soil rehab at ₪1,000–3,000 per dunam, about ₪300 million.2 That figure excludes greenhouse rebuilds, packing-house repair, and the years of lost yields.3

On-farm tractors cannot deep-rip 100,000 dunams. The job needs heavy iron. Subsoilers (tractor blades that fracture compacted earth 70 cm down). GPS-guided deep rippers. Drainage trenchers, organic-matter spreaders, prefab greenhouse-rebuild kits. There are not enough EPC crews (engineering-procurement-construction contractors who plan, supply and build under one contract) in Israel to do this at the scale the Tekuma Authority (the official Gaza-envelope rebuild body) is funding.4

₪300 million in first-pass soil rehab, before any greenhouse rebuild.2

02Who solves this today

2 self-marketing Israeli vendors cataloged below. We searched in English and Hebrew across the Israeli agricultural-contractor surface (Ministry of Agriculture supplier directories, the Israeli Farmers' Federation Otef-Aza tag feed, Hebrew trade press), the greenhouse-EPC market and the irrigation-reconstruction market for vendors whose product pages concretely address the bundled soil-rehab, greenhouse-rebuild and irrigation-reconstruction needs of Otef-Aza kibbutzim. We did not find a vendor whose product page concretely addresses the heavy-iron tillage half of the pain (subsoilers, GPS-guided deep rippers, drainage trenchers operated by an EPC crew at Tekuma scale). The two vendors below cover the greenhouse-rebuild and irrigation-reconstruction halves of the rebuild bundle, both with multi-step turnkey processes documented on their own product pages.

Azrom Creative Agri-Solutions
Otef-Aza-based greenhouse manufacturer at Kibbutz Yad Mordechai with over 60 years of operating history. Its Whole Solution product page documents an 8-step turnkey project pipeline (feasibility test → site analysis → solution planning → manufacturing & delivery in containers → infrastructure preparation → on-site project setup with work teams → training → agronomic support) covering greenhouse structures, climate control, irrigation, fertigation and trellising. Solves the protected-cropping half of the Otef Aza rebuild.
Gakon Netafim (Netafim Greenhouse Projects)
Greenhouse-projects arm of Netafim, the Israeli drip-irrigation maker (an Orbia company, headquartered at Kibbutz Hatzerim in the Negev). Its Commercial Greenhouse product page bundles greenhouse structures, greenhouse technology, water systems, project management and greenhouse financing under one contract ("From Start to Success") for commercial growers, plus the Netafim drip-irrigation reconstruction needed when berms and trenches have torn up the original lines.
